A Day In The Life Of A(n Accidental) Fabric Administrator
by Nicky van Vroenhoven
Do you know your way around Power BI Desktop, but don’t know what happens beyond it, or what has to be managed in the Service?
Do you have the privilege, as an IT Admin or Global Administrator, to “also take care of Fabric”?
Did you just receive the responsibility for some, or even all, Fabric Administrator tasks? And what about all the (new) Fabric workloads?
Do you also not know what the Power Platform (management) truly encompasses?
If you answer Yes to any of the questions above, this session is for you!
And did you know a Fabric Premium Capacity is not a switch you turn on and just walk away from. It’s like heating tomato soup in the microwave: if you don’t pay attention, it becomes a mess very quickly. 🙂
In this session, we will take a look at tasks and components that can (or should!) be part of a Fabric Admin’s daily routine.
– The changed role of the Fabric Admin
– Tenant settings
– Handling (My) Workspace(s)
– Capacity and Admin Monitoring
– Power Platform Admin Center
When you start applying the tips and tricks of this session, you will get a grip on your Fabric tenant and have happier users!

Nicky van Vroenhoven is a BI professional focused at the Microsoft stack and a Data Platform MVP. He mainly works with Power BI, Power Platform and T-SQL. Nicky started working with SQL Server and SSIS in 2005 in the DWH space, and later moved from Power Pivot to Power BI. After working 10 years in BI-consultancy jobs in several industries and companies, he worked for 5 years as a Power BI Administrator at a wealth management bank, and he is currently working as Unit Lead Fabric/Power BI at Powerdobs in The Netherlands.
Nicky has spoken at several User Groups and conferences including SQL Saturday Events, the Power BI World Tour, SQLBits and the Fabric Community Conference. In addition he enjoys tweeting and blogging about topics like Power BI and Power Platform at https://nickyvv.com.
In his spare time Nicky likes to go running, play chess or try to improve his Rubik’s cube record. He is also a husband, father of 3 and a (former) ballroom dancer.
Fabric Lakehouses for SQL Data Engineers
by Bas Land
In this session, Bas, a seasoned data engineer with over a decade of expertise in SQL Server, Azure SQL, and now Fabric, shares his transition journey and insights from building data warehouses with SQL to building them with lakehouses in Microsoft Fabric.
We dive into the changes required from traditional SQL data warehousing to using Fabric to build lakehouses.
The session is filled with practical examples, such as a comparison between (high-level) overviews of data warehousing using SQL and Fabric Lakehouses, the role of PySpark and all the good stuff we get with that (data transformations using a combination of SQL, python, and spark is awesome!). We also discuss the reusability of code (never again write a MERGE statement for every table you need to load) and some of the current pitfalls, such as Spark cluster startup times and frequent disconnects, that Bas found out during his first Fabric implementations.
After this session you’ll have a head start in creating your first Fabric lakehouse implementation.

Bas is one of the founders of Kimura (a Microsoft data consultancy) and DataChimp (a software product bringing data analytics to accountants and bookkeeping firms). He is an experienced data engineer and architect with over 10 years of experience in Microsoft SQL Server, Azure and now Fabric technology implementations.
In his spare time he likes to practice sports (Brazilian jiu-jitsu, running, weight lifting) and also going on walks with his fiancee, together with their two-year-old dachshund (daxhund?) Chester.
