Architecting Orchestration in Microsoft Fabric: From Pipelines to Airflow and API Triggers by Yari Bouwman

Session abstract

Microsoft Fabric gives us a lot of different ways to schedule and trigger data workflows. If you just start building without a plan, it is incredibly easy to end up with fragmented, unmaintainable pipelines. This session delivers a technical breakdown of Fabric’s orchestration ecosystem, focusing on design choices, limitations, and scalability.
We’ll talk about:

External Integrations: Best practices for plugging external tools like Dagster or Azure Data Factory into your Fabric environment.

Fabric Pipelines: Where the native low code UI shines but also the exact boundary where you must transition away from low code.

Managed Apache Airflow: How to use Fabric’s Airflow environment for heavy engineering workloads, including Git sync and DAG based scheduling for complex engineering workloads.

Custom Spark & Notebooks: When it makes sense to write custom orchestration logic using mssparkutils, and how to avoid the maintenance nightmares of custom code.

Event-Driven Triggers: Bridging external systems with Fabric using Power Automate, Logic Apps, and the REST API for state dependent workloads.

Modern lakehouse platforms offer multiple ways to transform and serve data, but choosing the right approach isn’t always straightforward. While dbt and Materialized Lake Views can both produce analytics-ready datasets, they address different challenges and excel in different scenarios. This session provides a comparison of both solutions, focusing on architecture, development workflows, governance, and operational trade-offs.

We’ll cover:

dbt: How dbt applies software engineering practices to data transformations through modular SQL models, testing, documentation, lineage, and CI/CD integration.

Materialized Lake Views: How native materialized views simplify data serving with managed refreshes and optimized query performance within Microsoft Fabric.

Architecture & Trade-offs: A side-by-side comparison of maintainability, performance, governance, operational complexity, and scalability.

Live Demo: Building the same transformation using both dbt and Materialized Lake Views to highlight their differences in practice.
